The aim of this study was to identify a simple, reliable, and rational method to evaluate chloride ion diffusion coefficients for civil engineering applications. To make the conclusions of the study relevant to field concrete structures, the chloride penetration data used to estimate the diffusion coefficients was generated using fairly large-sized reinforced concrete slabs subjected to long-term cyclic exposure to a chloride environment. To make the study comprehensive, the parameters influencing the microstructure of the concrete, such as water-to-binder ratio and supplementary mineral admixture, were included. On completion of the chloride exposure regime, the amount of chlorides penetrated at different depth intervals of the slabs was experimentally determined. The chloride penetration data thus obtained was then used to plot the chloride profiles, and also for estimating the diffusion coefficients based on a few selected methods.
