For many years the introduction of sample into the column represented the weak point for accurate quantitative analysis by capillary columns. In the last few years this has largely been remedied and good quantitation can be achieved by the use of one of the range of commercially available injectors. However, it was pointed out by Deans a number of years ago that the only completely reliable method of sample introduction was in the vapour phase, i.e. handling all samples as gases. While this might be true, it is something of a council of perfection and it is likely that syringe injection through a septum will be with us for the foreseeable future.
