The detections of H I absorption in the powerful radio galaxies 4C 31.04, 4C 29.30, and 3C 321 are reported. Against the nuclear ultracompact continuum radio source 4C 31.04, at the center of a distant giant elliptical galaxy, a high-velocity cloud of atomic hydrogen was detected. This absorption is highly blueshifted in the reference frame of the galaxy, with a projected velocity toward the giant elliptical of 400 km/s. It has two components with velocity widths (FWHM) of 6 and 16 km/s. This cloud may come from thermal instabilities in the halo of the giant elliptical galaxy at the center of the cluster or from a cannibalized spiral. 23 refs.
