Mono- and oligosaccharide microarrays play an essential role in the analysis of many important biological processes, such as DNA-sugar interactions, protein-sugar interactions, and sugar-sugar interactions. Based on the earlier success of DNA and protein microarrays, similar technologies emerged in the past years for sugar immobilization in order to fabricate carbohydrate microarrays. Efficient immobilization of various mono- and oligosaccharides of interest onto solid Surfaces is indispensable for successful preparation of carbohydrate microarrays. In this paper, we review the different techniques available for covalent and noncovalent immobilization of conjugated and nonconjugated simple and complex sugars onto a palette of various surfaces. We also give a short overview on some of the future prospects of this emerging field.
