Viruses also enhance nasopharyngeal bacterial colonization and adherence and alter the host’s immune defense. For example, influenza virus promoted colonization by Streptococcus pneumoniae in the oropharynx of adult volunteers and RSV increased nasopharyngeal colonization by Haemophilus influenzae in cotton rats. RSV, adenovirus and influenza A increased adherence of S. pneumoniae and H. influenzae to epithelial cells in vitro. Viruses also modulate the host’s immune function and increase the host susceptibility to secondary bacterial infection. For example, influenza virus has immunosuppressive effects on polymorphonuclear leukocytes, 10 and RSV and rhinovirus can alter cell-mediated immune function. 11, 12
