The genus Glaciecola was recently described by Bowman et al. 13 and to date, includes only two species (G. pallidula and G. punicea). Both species were isolated from Antarctic ice-diatom assemblage and described to be psychrophilic. 14 However, strain HA02 was isolated from a boundary of subtropical and subarctic sea regions, 1 off Hakodate, and was not psychrophilic. It is interesting that the two Glaciecola species and strain HA02 are quite different in the isolation source but common in that they have an ecologic relationship with algae. The sequence similarity ofThe results of the phylogenic analysis showed that the three strains belonged to the γ subclass of the class Proteobacteria. Strain AR06 was included in the genus Pseudoalteromonas (Fig. 1) and the highest percentage of the sequence similarity was found with Pseudoalteromonas atlantica IAM 12927T (99.9%). The DNA–DNA reassociation levels between the strains AR06 and the P. atlantica IAM 12927T were 74 and 127%(Table 1). Strain AR06 was assigned to P. atlantica based on these results and the phenotypic characteristics reported in a previous study. 4 Strain HA02 was included in the genus Glaciecola (Fig. 1) and the highest percentage of
