A 37-week-old male Wistar rat of strain WNIN (Wistar/NIN) from the breeding colony of the International Institute of Biotechnology and Toxicology was presented for necropsy with the history of a mass in the left lateral aspect of the cervicothoracic region. We maintained the rat under standard laboratory conditions. The room temperature was 18–21 C, relative humidity was 40–70% and the light: dark cycle was 12-h: 12-h. We gave the rat a pelleted diet from a commercial supplier and provided filtered, ultraviolet-treated water ad libitum. We carried out a complete necropsy on the rat. At necropsy, a firm, nodular, immobile, subcutaneous mass measuring approximately 4 cm in diameter was observed at the left lateral aspect of the cervicothoracic region (Fig. 1). We incised the mass and saw irregular cystic spaces (Fig. 1) that contained serosanguineous fluid. No abnormalities were seen in the other organs examined. We were not aware of similar macroscopic lesions being reported in our laboratory previously, in 9-month-old rats, either male or female. All organs, including the cervicothoracic mass, were fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin. Tissues were processed, embedded in paraffin, sectioned at 3–4 µm and stained with hematoxylin and eosin for histopathology evaluation. Histologically, the mass was densely cellular and surrounded by a thick capsule with bands of collagen extending into the parenchyma (Fig. 2a). It had an expansive growth pattern with cells arranged in lobules supported by fine connective tissue stroma. The cystic spaces seen at necropsy were infiltrated by neutrophils and contained necrotic cellular debris (Fig. 2b). Although cells were arranged in ribbons and islands in some areas, most of the mass was composed of solid, compact, uniform sheets of cells (Fig. 2c) characterized by scanty, amphophilic and homogenous cytoplasm b c a
