The phase equilibria between simple liquids and between liquids and crystalline solids have been extensively studied. More recently attention has been given to the solubility relations of long chain molecules, and much progress has been made in statistical thermodynamic calculations of the entropy of mixing of short and long chain molecules. 19 Amorphous polymers such as poly~ tyrene,~~ and rubber 5 have received most attention, their solubility in solvents being treated in terms of a two liquid system, but Huggins has shown how the unexpectedly high solubility of crystalline paraffins of moderate chain length, eg, Cg,, H122, is a con-sequence of a high entropy of solution which in turn is due to the flexibility of the paraffin molecule.Crystalline polymers have structures intermediate between those of amorphous polymers and entirely crystalline long chain materials, and the solubility behaviour is correspondingly more complex. In this paper the phase relations between polythene, a crystalline hydrocarbon polymer, and various typical short chain materials will be discussed, and the effect of average molecular weight and molecular weight distribution on the solubility will be examined. In the succeeding paper the effect of variation in the solvent type will be shown.
