The distributions of bicarbonate and Cl between plasma and aqueous humor of the bush baby was such that there was a deficiency of bicarbonate and an excess of Cl in the aqueous humor, compared with the concentrations expected of a dialysate of plasma. The aqueous humor of this species was thus similar to that of large-eyed animals like the horse, although the actual size of the eye lies between that of the rabbit and guinea pig. The rate of turnover of Na24 in the vitreous humor was rapid by comparison with other species, such as the rabbit, presumably because it was fluid and not a gel. It was suggested that this rapid turnover permits (adequate) buffering of the eye contents without the necessity for a high level of bicarbonate in the secreted fluid. The relative concentrations of sugar in aqueous and vitreous humors was consistent with the view that the vitreous humor is renewed relatively rapidly.
