THE highly interesting material whicli forms the subject of the present Monograph was collected by Prof. R. Douglas Laurie during tlie visit of the British Association to Aust, ralia in 1914. W e [nay quote liis own description, which is as follows:--<‘It consists of inaterial taken from between tidemark at ‘Middle Eeach’on t, he east side of the Island, whicli is the exposed side, i. r. without a coral reef. Tliore is a little coral to be seen growing on this sbore at low tide, hut on t, hc otlier-on the west side of tlie Island-is 11 coral reef quite well developed and protecting a lagoon, abont a mile from the land.
