ters are organized on the basis of standard sagittal, coronal, and horizontal sections. The illustrations are composed of India ink drawings from photographs of disaected specimens. This method of presentation allows for emphasis and clarity of the dissected specimens. The MRI pictures similarly are drawings to emphasize pertinent points. This method of presentation, however, does not permit an appreciation of the true signal intensities of the various structures depicted. Furthermore, different pulse sequences, and their effects on defining anatomic structures, are not illustrated or discussed. The combination of sagittal, axial, and coronal sketches on 1 page provides an excellent opportunity for 3-dimensional orientation. The 2nd portion of the book diecusees anatomic aspects of complicated operations in the depths of the brain. This section stresses only special or difficult dissections. Instructions are given for those who wish to pursue their own dissections, but the illustrations are clear enough to stand alone and provide help with preoperative orientation. The topics include the anterior midline approach, the middle basal area of the brain, transylvian d i m t i o n of the hippocampus area, the basal ganglia, the 3rd ventricle, and the lower brainstem. Since this section does not include “standard” operations, the text is not suitable for an introductory or encyclopedic atlas of neurosurgical procedures. Overall the book is a good reference source for gaining a 3-dimensional understanding of operative anatomy.
