In Nyanza Province of Kenya there are great areas of land in the belt betwzen Lake Victoria, at 3,726 feet, and the contour line slightly over 5,000 feet; within this belt Striga weed (Striga hermonthica Benth.) is found in great profusion in a large proportion of the patches of cereal crops grown by the natives.Before the harvest of the sorghums, which is the most common cereal in the area, expansive stretches of land in the district assume a red glow of colour, due to the presence of this weed. One may see a certain amount of the weed in the alienated farm land bordering on the Kenya and Uganda Railways and Harbours track, but there, by the aid of the Striga Rules, the weed has been brought well under control.
