both the expressed wishes of the Tokelauan communities on the one hand and the dictates of the United Nations Committee of 24 on the other. The present position appears to be that the Tokelauan communities are happy with the status quo and do not wish to change it. On the other hand New Zealand has a commitment to the United Nations to prepare the people of Tokelau for an act of self-determination and to place them in a position where their choice is a realistic one. No date has yet been set or envisaged for the act of self-determination of Tokelau. 21
