I can think of so many colleagues who are more deserving of this award, and so it came as a complete surprise this year when I was chosen to receive the Dennis D. Drotar Distinguished Research Award. It is an incredible honor to be recognized by my peers for a body of work that I feel is just beginning. Even with 20 or so years on this career path, I have five grants in my head at this very moment and at least 100 more papers to write! And in all honesty, I am uncomfortable receiving personal recognition for an achievement that we all know relies on years of hard work on behalf of numerous collaborators, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, research assistants, and countless undergraduate volunteers. In reality, research is the ultimate team sport.I am also humbled that my research contributions befit an award with Denny Drotar’s namesake. His impact on the field has been broad and will endure for many years to come. I would count myself lucky to achieve even half of the productivity and success he has accomplished in his lifetime. He has had an earnest and lasting dedication to improving the lives of children and families, and his commitment to training the next generation of researchers has been steadfast. Denny has led by example, constantly breaking new ground as a true pioneer in our field. Most of us can merely aspire to achieve this level of unwavering dedication.
