A brief historical account of the Commonwealth Potato Collection at Cambridge, England, is given. The first collecting expedition took place in 1939, when over 1000 lines of potato material were obtained from Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Argentina. This has since been augmented from time to time from various sources. During the yrs. 1940-1950 the collection served as a distribution center to breeders in the British Commonwealth, studies being made at Cambridge under the following headings: taxonomy; cytology; resistance to blight; resistance to Alternaria; virus studies; frost resistance; biochemical studies; resistance to eelworm (golden root nematode); photoperiodic response; and preliminary breeding studies. Tests for resistance to wart, Fusarium rot and Colorado beetle were also made at stations in other parts of the Commonwealth and in Great Britain. An outline of recent work and trends is also given, the emphasis being now placed on cytogenetical studies of the material in the collection. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: J. G. Hawkes
