Streptococci causing neonatal infection in piglets were identified serologically as belonging to group-D. Glycerophosphate, glucose and xylose were identified as components of the group substance isolated from these micro-organisms. The streptococci isolated from piglets with this disease in England appear to belong to a single serological type characterized by a capsular polysaccharide. Glucose, glucosamine and galactosamine were identified as components of the type-specific substance. It is suggested that these streptococci be designated capsular type-1 in Streptococcus suis, a new subgroup in group-D.
