In this issue, Olson and colleagues (1) tested whether a single-item measure of weight and shape concerns moderated the weight gain prevention effects among young adults (median [M] age= 27.7 years) randomized to interventions prescribing large versus small lifestyle changes or to a self-guided educational control condition. Because our team has developed an obesity prevention program (Healthy Weight) that also promotes small lifestyle changes (2), we attempted to replicate the evidence that a small-change obesity prevention program is more effective for those with high weight/shape concerns. No significant interactions between condition contrasts and weight/shape concerns were found (all P> 0.240).[...] we did not find support for weight/shape concerns moderating the effects of Healthy Weight on the change in BMI, suggesting that weight/shape concerns do not consistently moderate the effects of small-change obesity prevention programs.
