2. Short-latency peaks in the cross-correlations were observed in 17.2% of the pairs of neurons. Of these peaks, 7 1% straddled zero lag and 29% were to one side of zero lag. The short-latency peaks had associated widths that ranged from 1 to 5 ms (mean t SE= 2.5 t 0.2 ms). Only four of the neuron pairs had short-latency troughs in the cross-correlation histograms; these troughs were always restricted to one side of zero lag. 3. For interelectrode distances up to 2,000 pm, there was no significant variation with distance in either the probability that any pair of units had a correlation peak or in the strength of those correlations with peaks. 4. Strong electrotonic coupling between pairs of neurons was not observed. S. These results suggest that the source of the short time scale synchronization in these neurons is shared input.
