To rhe Editor: FOWLER, WILSON and KOESTNER in ‘Biologic Behavior of Canine Mammary Neoplasms Based on a Histogenetic Classification’ (Vet. Pathol. 11: 212,1974) note that they were disappointed in the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of mammary tumors. I agree with the authors. WHO should allow a larger number of veterinary pathologists to participate in a program to classify neoplasms of domestic animals, similar to the WHO system used for classifying human tumors. Veterinary colleges and large veterinary clinics in the United States, Europe and elsewhere should be allowed to participate. Committees of veterinary pathologists with interest and experience should be organized for each organ or tissue. These committees might also be composed of individuals with differing viewpoints. Hopefully, compromises on terminology and classification should result in a well-accepted classification. My recommendations have been made to Drs. SOBIN and BEVERIDGE. I suggest that pathologists with any recommendations should do likewise, as well as contact those responsible for each classification. Drs. MISDORP and HAMPE have sought criticism of their work.
