Using code violation and complaint data as measures of quality of care, the authors analyzed differences among Wisconsin nursing homes according to size and ownership classifications. They found that, in general, nonprofit homes have fewer violations and complaints than profit homes and small homes have fewer violations than large homes. However, using regression analytic techniques and controlling for the effects of size and ownership, the authors found an interaction effect: large nonprofit homes tend to have more violations than large profit homes. An assessment of why these differences exist is discussed.
