This article reviews key studies that assessed the reactivity of self-monitoring to evaluate it as an interventive tactic. In addition, studies are reviewed that analyzed the reliability and accuracy of self-monitored records to update our knowledge about self-monitoring as a research tool. Variables thought to predict the reactive effect—the change that occurs when clients record data about themselves—are discussed. Self-monitoring remains a puzzling phenomenon; practice-related questions are raised. The need for research in social work settings is argued, and directions for future investigations are suggested.
