1. Introduction. Santiago del Estero Quechua (henceforth SdEQ) is a dialect of the Quechua language spoken in the province of Santiago del Estero, in central northern Argentina.'The most recent estimate puts the number of native speakers at 150,000 (Nardi 1962: 190). This article begins with a historical investigation into the multiple origins of the phoneme/s'/in SdEQ, in order to show that most occurrences of this phoneme are regular reflexes of Proto-Quechua consonants. In 2, evidence is given for sound symbolism as an explanation for occurrences of/s/which appear to provide exceptions to the regular sound laws. In 3, some conclusions concerning the varying degrees of lexicalization of sound symbolism in SdEQ are presented. 2 Sound symbolism, as used in this article, can be defined as the kind of expressive use of language (Samarin 1978: 313) in which there is a oneto-one relationship between a phoneme or a phonological feature and an element of meaning (Diffloth 1972: 445). 3 The significance of expressive vocabulary in general and of sound symbolism in particular for the
