For many, unemployment triggers a precipitous financial decline. In a sample of 254 recently unemployed men and women recruited from unemployment offices in urban and suburban counties in Southern Maryland, only about 6% were below the poverty line before job loss, whereas nearly 40% were below the poverty line after job loss. Six months later, 21% of the families remained below the poverty line. A substantial body of research has demonstrated a link between job loss and subsequent increases in depressive symptoms. 1–4 Longitudinal investigations have suggested further that it is the unemployment experience that causes the depressive affect rather than preexisting vulnerabilities. 3, 5, 6 Although some propose that reemployment may reverse the depressive effects of unemployment, 1–3 the extant evidence has not ruled out the possibility that depression may delay reemployment. Also, the role of demographic indicators in this process remains unexplored.
