Unilateral lung exposure to pollutants allows distinction between primary and homeostatic effects. Rabbits were exposed to 0.5, 0.75, or 3 ppM O/sub 3/ unilaterally for 3 hr. Pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) obtained by lavage were tested. Dose-related decrease in PAM viability from exposed lung was observed. There was an increase in polymorphonuclear leukocytes at expense of PAM although absolute numbers of PAM did not change. There was a dose-related decrease in activity of hydrolytic enzymes, acid phosphatase, lysozyme, and beta-glucuronidase, critical in digestion of phagocytized organic particles and organisms. Admittedly more O/sub 3/ would reach lung during unilateral exposure (less upper airway degradation).
