This paper aims to show that the modern representation theory of finite dimensional algebras, usually judged to be of fairly recent origin, has strong roots within classical mathematics. We do justify this claim by exploring the links betweentame hereditary algebras ∑ and simple surface singularities (corresponding to the invariant theory of binary polyhedral groups)wild canonical algebras Λ and automorphic forms, respectively.
