The inhibitory effect of phlorrhizin on the intestinal absorption of glucose has long been known, and Fisher & Parsons (1950) showed that the inhibition could also be obtained in vitro. The effect of very small concentrations of phlorrhizin on the transport of glucose and of water has been studied by Jervis, Johnson, Sheff & Smyth (1956) and by Smyth & Taylor (1955a, 1957). The following experiments were undertaken to investigate further the inhibition by phlorrhizin of glucose and water transport and to find whether these inhibitions could be related to the effect of phlorrhizin on the metabolism of the intestine. As indices of metabolic activity oxygen consumption, glucose utilization and lactic acid production were chosen, and studies were made of the effects of various concentrations of phlorrhizin on these, and on the capacity of the intestine to transport water and glucose. The present paper is an amplification and extension of a preliminary report of Smyth & Taylor (1955b).
