The major venous sinuses of the cerebral dura mater have been categorized in most anatomical textbooks as the superior and inferior sagittal, the straight, the lateral or transverse, the cavernous, the sphenoid, the superior and inferior petrosal, the occipital, and marginal sinuses. Basic components of these venous pathways are for the most part present in all individuals; however, developmental alterations lead to a great variation in their final configuration which in some has surgical significance.Nine hundred and forty-eight specimens of cerebral dura mater and their enclosed sinuses have been obtained at autopsy. These have been processed, described, probed, diagrammed, and in approximately onehalf, segments of the sinuses injected with vinylite and subsequently corroded. The resultant casts showed the details of the sinuses and their joining veins. From this material we have drawn conclusions of surgical import which are herein presented in brief.
