The claim that physiological research is not nursing research echoes down the corridors of many nursing research meetings. The claim is made despite the fact that physiological studies, including animal studies, are funded by nursing agencies such as the National Institute for Nursing Research, the American Nurses Foundation, and Sigma Theta Tau. This contradiction needs to be examined and corrected.Part of the confusion regarding the fit of physiological research within nursing comes from the struggle of nursing to gain autonomy as a separate profession from medicine. During the attempt to develop a body of knowledge that is distinctly nursing, some nurses diminished the role of physiology because it was seen as belonging to medicine. Nursing research then claimed psychosocial issues as its own. However, this informal definition of nursing research, which states that only psychosocial issues are pertinent to nursing, is indefensible when nursing is formally defined as a profession that takes a holistic view of its clients. Holism implies that the physiological aspects of the human being are as important as psychosocial, spiritual, and environmental factors. Roy, Neuman, and other theorists included the physiological aspects of the person in their nursing paradigms (see Fawcett, 1984, for review). If nursing conceptual models serve to provide a more unified definition of nursing, it is illogical to exclude physiological research from the nursing profession.
