The reviews in Volume 62 of the Annual Review of Physiology were chosen two years ago. The chance occurrence of my being Editor of the Respiratory Section at that time, and the publication of these reviews at onset of a new millenium, have thrust upon me the task of trying to record, in one place, the highlights of respiratory physiology of the 20th century. I am not adequate to the task, but I can’t duck the assignment. I apologize to all offended by what I have included or excluded from this list.
