As a result of many investigations, particularly those of Langmuir, Adam, Rideal 2nd their co-workers, the properties and structures of insoluble films at the airlwater interface are now known in some detail. 1 Such interfacial films, while not so closely related to those in biological systems as are those at the oil/water interface, are, however, much more amenable to experimental study. The only published work on insoluble films at an oil/water interface appears to be that of Askew and Danielli and of Danielli who, using a modification of the surface balance of Adam and Jessop, succeeded in measuring the force-area relationship for several compoynds (egg-albumin, a-amino-palmitic acid, the C,, amide, and a methyl cellulose) at the bromobenzene/water interface. For several reasons, however, as will be discussed below, this method is not very satisfactory.
