1. Introduction.–Brucea is a genus with ca. six species mainly found in tropical eastern hemisphere areas. Brucea mollis and B. javanica, the only two species in China, are used as traditional herbal medicines because of their antitumor and antimalaria activities [1]. The green herbal medicinal plant B. mollis is distributed in southwestern China (Yunnan and Guangzhou Provinces). The herbal medicinal plant B. javanica exhibits more biological activities. This plant, called Yadanzi, distributed in the south of China (mainly Guangxi and Guangdong Provinces), shows antitumor, antimalaria, and antigastric-ulcer activities [1–3]. Recently, much attention has been paid to the Brucea genus and its chemical constituents because of the multifaceted activities. Extensive studies of the genus Brucea have led to the identification of many compounds, such as nigakilactones, alkaloids, triterpenoids, and flavonoids. In this review, we summarize the phytochemical progress and list the compounds isolated from the genus Brucea over the past decades, also considering the biological activities.
