The fact that pronounced differences exist between various species in the distribution of ocular adrenergic nerves, e. g. in the chamber angle or in the sphincter pupillae (Ehinger 1964 b and 1965 a c) has prompted further studies on the ocular innervation of various mammals. In addition to their general interest, such investigations can be expected to shed light on some discrepant physiological and pharmacological results. The uptake of catecholamines (CA) and DOPA into adrenergic nerves can be visualized with the fluorescence technique of Falck and Hillarp (cf. Falck and Owman 1965 b, Malmfors 1965). Thus, nerves which do not normally display any fluorescence but possess such an uptake mechanism may be demonstrated. Previous investigations have in certain species failed to show adrenergic fibres a t some sites were they could be expected, and where they are to be found in other species (Ehinger 1964 b, 1966 a-c). Experiments designed to show nerves with the ability to take up and to store I-DOPA or DA are necessary in order to be able to state any absence of adrenergic fibres with reasonable occuracy.
