This is a brief report of some of the work carried out during the past three years by a special office created in the Department of Mental Hygiene in 1956. This unit was created to help plan and develop improved services in New York State, both within and outside psychiatric hospitals, for aged persons whose need for psychiatric care was either unrecognized or incompletely met. Since its creation the ofice has worked in four major areas. First, we made a survey of old age homes, nursing homes and state hospitals, with especial interest in determining the characteristics of persons more than 64 years old when admitted to these institutions for the first time. Second, we tried to collect information about the services offered by these facilities as well as the referral agencies, counselling centers and city hospital reception wards. Third, we began accumulating a bibliography on the care and treatment of mentally ill aged persons for annotation and eventual publication, and a t the same time used these files in attempting to answer questions of interested agencies and persons, especially in the Department of Mental Hygiene. Fourth, and one of the most important aspects of our work, we served as a friendly link between metropolitan nonprofit community welfare agencies and the Department of Mental Hygiene in facilitating cooperative effort, coordination of services and sharing of information, for mutual profitable development. A t the same time we gained first-hand experience about the use or misuse of, and the gaps or duplications in, our health services. In addition our Office developed methods of rating the mental and physical health of aged persons for screening and classification, and provided consultation service, lectures and information to nonprofit social agencies, and occasionally was even of assistance
