In view of continuing uncertainties concerning the organization, afferent inputs and projection sites of neurons in the subnucleus interpolaris of the trigeminal (V) spinal tract nucleus, the characteristics of 222 single neurons in and adjacent to the subnucleus were examined electrophysiologically in adult cats anesthetized with chloralose. This study demonstrated that the V subnucleus interpolaris of the cat is a somatotopically organized structure in which the major neuron type is the LTM neuron that has a restricted mechanoreceptive field. A considerable amount of convergence of cutaneous, mucosal, muscle and tooth pulp afferents occurs. Moreover, nociceptive neurons exist in the interpolaris that may contribute to V nociceptive mechanisms. Electrophysiological evidence that many interpolaris neurons of all 3 classes project directly to thalamus, cerebellum or spinal cord, and that their responsiveness to nonnoxious as well as to noxious stimuli can be modulated by descending influences from PAG was provided.
