The weight of interscapular brown fat in the rat and its rate of respiration increased in response to a single meal. Brown adipose tissue apparently plays a role in the thermic effect of meals. Diet-induced thermogenesis may reflect the summation of the thermic effects of single meals during prolonged overeating.
