NORTH AMERICAN FORESTRY IS CHANGING AT A rate unprecedented in its history. New forestry. New Perspectives, ecosystem management, and the other" new" paradigms were born from concern by some that the intensive forest management model was not an appropriate vehicle to maintain ecological processes and values (Franklin 1989, Robertson 1991, Overbay 1992). The new paradigms seek to balance commodity production. with maintenance of biological diversity, sustainable productivity, and multiple-use potential at scales that transcend the individual stand. Such paradigms call for stand structure objectives with landscapelevel implications that are usually very different from the timberoriented prescriptions of the last 25 years.
