The genetic character for short-tail is lethal in the homozygous condition. Embryos carrying this complex show the following ab-normalies: The notochord is reduced in the early somite stage and lacking in later stages. Blisters of the dorsal eplthelium occur in early stages. The neural tube shows numerous side branches. Somites are greatly reduced and irregular. The posterior end does not develop. Pycnotic granules, indicating cellular degeneration, are present in the primitive streak and associated structures. Homo-zygous embryos regularly die just before reaching 11 days of age. Heterozygous animals, which are characterized postnatally by a shortened tail, have tails equal in length to those of normal embryos at 12 days'' development. The distal end of the tail is represented only by a segmented filament, however. The neural tube and notochord are abnormal just proximal to this filament and do not enter it. The notochord produces abnormal diverticula in the lumbosacral region. The neural tube is normal here. From these facts and from the results of the exps. on amphibians and the chick it is concluded that in the mouse the notochord has a formative influence upon the neural tube. Such a conclusion has already been reached by other workers for the chick and Amphibia.
