Improving health care and reductions in infectious diseases have resulted in a ‘health transition’wherein injuries are becoming a major public health problem in India. 1 Among all injuries, road traffic injuries have increasingly become more common. Increasing population together with unorganized urbanization have been cited as major reasons contributing to the problem of increasing road traffic injuries in India. For some progress to be achieved nationwide in accident prevention, road safety has to be identified as a national goal, with adequate design and implementation of policies and programs. However, this is usually not sufficient, and some decentralized initiatives involving local actors are also required. 2 The purpose of this study was to obtain the views of different groups of citizens on road transportation and safety in an urban locality of southern India.
