Summary Projective, self-report, and inventory measures of hostility were completed by 220 male and female Canadian university students. Simple self-report measures of verbal, physical, and fantasy aggression fared quite favorably in comparisons with other measures in the battery. Factor analysis resulted in a principal dimension of Social Desirability arising from a pattern of stronger associations between the battery measures and social desirability than among the measures themselves. Two lesser dimensions of Direct-Indirect (sex-linked) and Retribution were also found to underlie the hostility measures.
