STRETCH LIMOUSINES were waiting at the door, the me-dia were lined up, and an exclusive news room filled with investors and biotechnology groupies was waiting for a new Australian/US collaborative to unfold. At 12 noon in Chicago’s McCormick Convention Center, representatives of the Victorian State Government, representatives from the Melbourne-based Australian Stem Cell Center at Monash University, the J. Craig Venter Institute, and the University of California San Diego gathered for the official announcement of a new multidisciplinary endeavor to the ultimate benefit of human health and biomedical technology (Fig. 1). The press conference was held during the annual Bio 2006 conference in Chicago, hosting 16,000 biotechnology industry leaders and 1,600 exhibits under one roof. The Australian State Government of Victoria, the driving force behind the initiative, has taken a leading role in Australian stem cell science following the discovery of human embryonic stem cells in Alan Trounson’s and Martin Pera’s laboratory at Monash University in 1998. Recently, Victoria announced the establishment of a $154 million dollar Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute at Monash University.Steve Bracks, the premier of Victoria, called this collaboration a historic initiative that will cement Victoria as a global leader in stem cell research. He emphasized the agreement on fast-track research and knowledge transfer between Victoria and San Diego. John Brumby, Victoria’s Minister for Innovation, welcomed a 3-year agreement on the distribution of Victorian-developed biomedical products, including stem cell lines, antibod-
