The proper maintenance of organismal acid–base status requires the choreographed regulation of plasma pH by the following three major systems: H+ buffering by HCO3− and non-HCO3− species, HCO3− reabsorption/H+ excretion by renal mechanisms, and PCO2 adjustments by pulmonary ventilation. Central chemoreceptors in the brain contribute to the ventilatory response by sensing changes in CO2/H+. The systemic circulation must therefore relay its PCO2/acid–base status to the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and brain interstitial fluid via the blood–CSF and blood–brain barriers. Optimal pH regulation requires balanced movement of both CO2 and far less permeant acid–base species such as HCO3− across these barriers. What key proteins are responsible for such HCO3− movement?
