Currently, three inhibitors of HIV-I protease are showing promise in clinical use against HIV infection. However, the development of resistance continues to be an important consideration in protease inhibitor therapy. Mutations in protease which lead to resistance have been observed in both inhibitor treated and untreated individuals (Borman et al., 1996; Condra et al., 1995). Variations have also been observed to a higher degree in areas of thegagregion including p7, and the cleavage site sequences (Barrie et al., 1996).
