A major task of the immune system is to defend the body against transformed cells, cells infected by viruses, and other foreign invaders, including bacteria and other microorganisms. Among the cell types assigned to carry out this function are lymphocytes, which can be viewed as the foot soldiers of the immune system in that they deliver directly lethal hits against intruding cells. Killing of target cells (TCs) is not unique to mammalian systems, as a number of lower organisms, including yeast, fungi, protozoa, and bacteria, are also capable of injuring other cell types. However, the killing mediated by lymphocytes differs from other forms of cytotoxicity in that a close contact between the lymphocyte and the TC is required to elicit the killing event. A
