At the Royal Naval Hospital, Chatham, an investigation into the reinfection of patients with tinea pedis through the agency of their socks and shoes was carried out on 104 proved and 19 suspected cases, together with 100 normal controls. Dermatophytes-nearly alwaysTrichophyton interdigitale [T. menta-grophytes] but occasionallyEpidermophyton floccosumand onceT. crateriforme [T. tonsurans]-were isolated from the socks of 35 of the proved cases, six of the suspected, and five of the controls.T. mentagrophyteswas readily recovered from the laundered socks of infected patients even when they had been unused for five months. By dyeing a patient's foot it was possible to trace the persistence of skin squamae in the fabric of socks; they were found to survive six successive launderings in woollen, but only two in broad-mesh nylon socks, which are therefore recommended for general use.Patients in the 'suspected' group in whom no fungus could be demonstrated are believed to have originally harboured a fungal infection which had developed into a recalcitrant mycotic eczema.
