Follicular mucinosis (FM) was first described by Pinkus in 1957 as alopecia mucinosa referring to a degenerative process of hair follicles resulting in alopecia. 1 The condition was later renamed FM because alopecia is not always present. 2 FM is classified mainly as a primary idiopathic form or a secondary malignancy-associated form. We report herein the first case of FM developed on irradiated skin.A 70-year-old Japanese man was referred to our clinic with an asymptomatic skin lesion on the left neck, which had been noticed 6 months earlier. His past history showed acute radiodermatitis in this area 2 years prior when he was given radiation therapy after excision of squamous cell carcinoma of oral mucosa. The radiation therapy was provided by a linear accelerator delivering an electron beam to a total of 63 Gy, 1.8 Gy/day, 5 days/week, for 7 weeks. After the irradiation, no recurrence has been found to date.
