The mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (vomitoxin) was incubated in vitro with rumen fluid and sampled at regular intervals. At feed contamination levels (up to 10 ppm) deoxynivalenol was virtually all transformed within a 24-h period. The single transformation product was identified as 3.alpha.,7.alpha.,15-trihydroxytrichothec-9,12-dein-8-one by IR, UV, MS [mass spectrometry] and NMR. A similar treatment of 3-acetoxydeoxynivalenol caused deacetylation prior to transformation.
