This chapter describes in detail the basic mechanisms which influence the spectral properties of major earth surface features including vegetation, soil and water, in the visible, near and middle infrared wavelengths; data recorded through these parts of the electromagnetic spectrum are most frequently available to the user of remote sensing, and if the controlling mechanisms are properly understood then it is possible to make inferences regarding the physical and physiological nature of earth objects from measured spectral response.
