Meta-analysis is used to systematically assess multiple previous studies addressing the same question. Because the conclusion of meta-analysis is established based on statistical inference, the design of testing hypothesis and the analysis procedure are critical. The selection of the primary end point should be predetermined before the analysis and clinically justified. When the number of studies is small in the meta-analysis, the power analysis can provide guidance for the following analysis (Hedges and Pigott, 2001; Valentine et al., 2010). Moreover, it has been known that publication bias can affect the conclusion and generalization of findings (Lin and Chu, 2018; Thornton and Lee, 2000). These factors can jointly influence the final conclusion of the meta-analysis.We at The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease are dedicated to publishing high-quality research articles that make original contributions to science and clinical practice. A key component of rigorous research is reproducibility (Begley and Ioannidis, 2015; Peng, 2011). In light of the nature of the publicly available data in meta-analysis, we strongly encourage the authors of the study by Church et al.(2018, 2020, 2021) to submit the analysis codes and data as supplementary materials to the journal website. The submitted materials will allow one to reproduce the results to support claims in the articles and better understand the results based on previously published results. This would also help to address the concerns of Spielmans et al.(2020, 2021) and reach the consensus “whether acupoint tapping is effective.”
