The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of aquarobics on the levels of dementia related factors and blood lipids in older women. Twenty community-dwelling older women aged 65-75 years participated in this study. Ten subjects in the aquarobics group (AG) participated in one-hour, three days/week aquarobics exercise program for 12 weeks. Ten subjects were in the control group (CG). The levels of homocysteine, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfates (DHEAs), and cholesterol in all subjects were assessed before and after the program. Mean (±SD) age of 20 subjects was 70.7 (±3.2). The levels of homocysteine were significantly decreased after the aquarobics exercise program (p<.05) in the AG compared to the CG. The levels of DHEAs were significantly increased after the program (p<.05). Total cholesterol and triglyceride levels were significantly decreased after the program (p<.05) in the AG compared to the CG. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol level was significantly increased (p<.05) after the program. The findings of this study suggest that regular aquarobics exercise program may be effective in preventing dementia in older adults by improving cardiovascular risks and homocysteine and DHEAs levels.
