The large amount of practical information compressed into this book of 261 pages has evidently been thoroughly tested by years of application in the laboratory. At the same time, brief, scholarly, and clear descriptions of principles are included, so that the important purpose is accomplished, of clarifying the significant steps required for meaningful results in histochemistry. The first two parts of the book contain pertinent material on the difficult problem of immobilizing, in the sections, the chemical components and enzymes to be demonstrated and their reaction products, to prevent diffusion or leaching from the cells. Among various approaches discussed are simple means for rapid freezing and the use of hydrogen-bonding protective additives such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). In the next part, problems of quantitation are touched upon. A brief section on the most frequently used standard and special stains of histology follows.
